Photography Exhibition by Susan Sweeney

A year ago the Journalism Society was among those who were invited to attend the opening of DBS lecturer Susan Sweeney’s photography exhibition.

Susan had invited friends in the arts to compose short poems about some of the artworks, and these were each read at the opening, which created an interactive and involving atmosphere. The title of the collection was Ekphrasis2020. According to Oxford Languages, this is “the use of detailed description of a work of visual art as a literary device.”

We circulated, met friends, made friends, and sampled the wine and nibbles. A wide variety of age groups attended, from students to seniors. Many DBS students and lecturers were among the guests enjoying the evening.

The location was the Copper House Gallery, a converted building neatly located down a few Dublin city centre side streets; the useful Google Maps brought me there that evening.

Susan’s photos were in sets of separate themes, and my favourites showed Bull Island, a north Dublin coastal amenity and wildlife reserve. In one, the photographer was imitating a bull, while in others we saw locals going about their lives. The colours were vivid and memorable.

In her speech, Susan thanked all her friends who helped make the evening so successful, and encouraged us all to find new challenges and achieve more than we ever expected. We wish her more of the same in return.
